<note>Gempa bumi umumnya menggambarkan proses dinamis yang melibatkan akumulasi stress (tekanan) dan pelepasan strain (regangan). Gelombang seismik merupakan gelombang yang merambat melalui bumi. Perambatan gelombang ini bergantung pada sifat elastisitas batuan. Gelombang seismik termasuk dalam gelombang elastik karena medium yang dilalui yaitu bumi bersifat elastik. Oleh karena itu sifat penjalaran gelombang seismik bergantung pada elastisitas batuan yang dilewatinya. Selama terjadinya gempa akan terjadi penjalaran gelombang dari batuan dasar ke permukaan tanah. Perjalanan perambatan gelombang sangat dipengaruhi oleh sifat-sifat dinamik tanah yang dilewati oleh gelombang gempa tersebut. Program NERA adalah salah satu program yang menggunakan analisis respon satu dimensi yang berarti Gelombang geser merambat secara vertikal dalam sistem berlapis satu dimensi, dimana lapisan tanah diasumsikan bersifat (1) horisontal secara homogen, (2) luas horizontal tak terbatas, dan (3) hanya dikenai gerakan horizontal dari batuan dasar.</note>
